CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

My cell phone rang when we were halfway home to my apartment. I glanced at the screen. "It's Curt."

Maizy swerved over to the curb and stopped. "Better take it."

"Are you anywhere near the Silver Star Gym?" Curt asked me.

I pushed out a sigh. "How many times do we need to go through this? I know I need to work out more often. I just don't want to lie on sweaty benches and listen to grown men grunt like apes."

"Thank you for that," Curt said, "but you might want to know who's bench-pressing across the room right now." He snorted. "A hundred fifty pounds."

I sat up a little straighter. "Petal Peterson?"

Maizy sat up a little straighter too, her face growing dark. "Where is she?" she whispered. "Is she giggling?"

"She's bench-pressing a hundred fifty pounds," I whispered.

"That's practically a person," Maizy whispered back. "We might need a new plan for her if she can bench-press a person."

I didn't know we had an old plan. I couldn't take two of Maizy's plans in the same day.

"Petal Peterson?" Curt repeated. "Be serious. It's some guy Bull, spouting off about working with Kay Culverson."

"Are you sure?" I asked him.

"No," Curt said. "I run into so many guys named Bull who tell that story, I could be confused. Huge head, big round shoulders, a little stupid-looking?"

I nodded. "That's him."

I held the phone to my chest and looked at Maizy. "Bull's at the gym with Curt."

Maizy nodded. "That's Jacob, right? The camera guy?"

I might've known she had a dossier. I nodded. "He's the reason you never noticed Kay's paddle feet."

"She had paddle feet?" Maizy asked. "Like a duck, you mean?"

"Like a canoe," I said.

"Huh." Maizy thought about that. "That explains those gigantic boots in her office. I thought maybe she was a cross-dresser."

I stared at her. "She was a woman, Maize."

She nodded. "That's what she wanted you to think."

"Jamie!" Curt yelled.

I put the phone on speaker. "Maizy's here with me."

He went silent for a moment. "You're not back at the studio, are you?"

"We went to the mall, Uncle Curt," Maizy said. "I got an amethyst belly ring. It totally rocks."

"The mall," Curt repeated. "Would that be the same mall where the cops are looking for some hairless albino domestic thief?"

That explained a lot. And at the same time, so little.

Maizy and I looked at each other.

"No," she said. "I don't know anything about that. Do you, Jamie?" She put her hand over the phone. "And he's not an albino," she whispered. "He's just pale."

"I'm clueless," I said to Curt. I put my hand over the phone. "Now I know why he tried to give me a hand towel and a pillow."

Maizy smiled. "Pillows are nice."

"The same mall," Curt said, "where people have reported seeing his accomplice in some hideous getup of pink hip-hugger bell-bottoms and a fringe vest?" He hesitated. "Using a walker?" he added, sounding pained.

I pressed the phone to my chest again. "Dump that walker," I whispered to Maizy.

She nodded. "I'll trade it in for a Canadian crutch.
